Stephens, the sculptor Thomas Woolner, and the critic William Michael Rossetti (Dante Gabriel’s brother) joined them by invitation. The painters William Dyce and Ford Madox Brown, who acted in part as mentors to the younger men, came to adapt their own work to the Pre-Raphaelite style.
They would later convince James Collinson, Frederic George Stephens, Thomas Woolner, and Dante’s brother, William Michael Rossetti to join. Together, the seven men would make art and write essays in defense of their style. I’m doing a series of posts highlighting some paintings by the different members of the Brotherhood.

The NPG holds a bust too, created a decade later, this time by Thomas Woolner, sculptor, poet and founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The caravan had moved on, so this time there was a fee - albeit one settled by an admirer.
