Nicolas Poussin (Les Andelys, Normandia 1594 - Roma 1665) fou un pintor francès.El 1624 arribà a Roma on estudia l'estatuària romana i s'influencia notablement dels pintors Rafael i Ticià.El seu art es troba dins una estètica esteticista i classicista per això fa servir molts temes mitològics i històrics que sovint tenen un element paisatgístic important.

Életpályája. Poussin elszegényedett, egyszerű nemesi család sarjaként született. Apja a francia királyi hadseregben szolgált. Tanulmányait 16 évesen kezdte Rouenban, majd Párizsban folytatta egészen 1621-ig. A francia királyi udvarhoz közeli ún. „fontainebleau-i festőiskola” művei a korai éveiben nagy hatással voltak rá.
