R5-D4 is a character first introduced when Star Wars began in 1977. R5 was aboard the sandcrawler when the Jawa's visited the Lars homestead to sell droids, among the likes of R2-D2 and C-3PO.

But R5's motivator blew as he rolled away from the sandcrawler, forcing the Jawas to take him back in exchange for R2-D2.
