The 30-year-old allegedly stabbed Martin in his back and chest as he worked during his janitor assignment, killing him instantly, reported The Gaffney Ledger. Just a few days later, the state charged Rumsey for the murder.
On May 31, 1972, while incarcerated at Central Correctional Institution in Columbia, Martin was stabbed to death by fellow inmate Kenneth Marshall Rumsey. Rumsey killed himself in prison five years later.
