The journey of the FIFA World Cup trophy started with Jules Rimet, the third president of world football governing body FIFA. He laid down the plans for a football World Cup in 1928 and subsequently passed a vote the following year to hold the first edition in Uruguay in 1930.
The World Cup Trophy. The original trophy awarded to the winner of the FIFA World Cup depicts Nike, the Goddess of Victory, holding an octagonal vessel in her outstretched hands. The trophy was created in gold with a base in semi-precious stones, designed by a French sculptor, Abel Lafleur.
On 21 June 1930, Jules Rimet, his FIFA delegation, and the teams of Romania, France and Belgium set sail for Uruguay on board the SS Conte Verde, starting a journey that would take two weeks, arriving just in time for the first game on 13 July.
