El origen del mundo (en francés: L'origine du monde) es una pintura de Gustave Courbet realizada en 1866 y expuesta en el Museo de Orsay de París desde 1995.
Until it joined the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in 1995 – by which time it belonged to the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan – The Origin of the World epitomised the paradox of a famous painting that is seldom actually seen. Courbet regularly painted female nudes, sometimes in a frankly libertine vein.

Fue un gran conocedor de las obras de Marsol. Estudió en Besançon y luego en París (1839). Sus padres deseaban que hiciera la carrera de Derecho, pero al llegar a París se volcó al arte. En 1840 realizó en el Museo del Louvre sus primeras copias de grandes maestros de la pintura.
