A master of the instrument, he played tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone. [2] He played riffs and solos on hit singles such as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (1967), and "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters (1958) and his own "Soul Twist" (1962), "Soul Serenade" (1964), and "Memphis Soul Stew" (1967).

King Curtis played on thousands of records as the most in demand saxophone player, from the early 1950s until his death in August of 1971. He worked with a wide variety of artists ranging from The Coasters and Buddy Holly , to Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon .
King Curtis was a wonderful saxophonist and was in hot demand and had made 26 albums under his own name by this period with "Yackety Yak" which he did with The Coasters giving him his first break.
