The two albums were conceived in the aftermath of a breakup and after touring with her band Big Thief was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adrianne Lenker (born July 9, 1991) is an American singer-songwriter from Plymouth, Minnesota. She is the guitarist and lead vocalist of Brooklyn-based indie rock band Big Thief.

While in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lenker wrote and recorded two albums, Songs and Instrumentals, which were released on October 23, 2020. The albums focused on less production and a more acoustic sound with traditional folk songwriting and improvisation.
