La agrupación se completaba con el bajista Mark Perlman y el baterista Norm Rogers, que poco después sería sustituido por Thad Spencer. Así, con el humilde sello independiente Bunkhouse, The Jayhawks publicaron en 1986 su LP homónimo.
In 1985 the short-lived trio was relaunched as a four-piece band after Olson recruited Steve Retzler (guitar), Marc Perlman (bass), and Norm Rogers (drums). Later that year Gary Louris (guitar and vocals) replaced Retzler. Their first album, The Jayhawks, was released by Bunkhouse Records, a small independent label, in 1986.

Marc Perlman is an ethnomusicologist who studies music in Indonesia and other regions. He has published articles in various journals and books, and was a Fellow of the Society for the Humanities at Cornell.
Ocean State Job Lot was founded in 1977 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island by Marc Perlman, Alan Perlman, and Roy Dubs. After Ames went bankrupt in 2002, Ocean State Job Lot expanded by buying many of its former locations in New England.
Over the ensuing decades, the band would go on to record a series of highly influential albums and tour the world countless times over, sharing stages with everyone from Bob Dylan and Tom Petty to Lucinda Williams and Wilco along the way.
