Edward Livingston (1764-1836) was an American jurist, statesman and slaveholder. He served as U.S. Secretary of State, Minister to France, Senator, Mayor of New York City and drafted the Louisiana Civil Code.

Edward Livingston was a lawyer, politician, and diplomat who served as Secretary of State from 1831 to 1833. He faced challenges in resolving disputes with Britain, France, and Mexico, and helped settle the French Spoliation Claims Treaty as U.S. Minister to France.
Livingston practiced law in New York City for ten years; he then was elected as a New York representative to the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Congresses. Livingston belonged to the Democrat-Republican faction that opposed George Washington’s and John Adams’s federalist policies.
