Pope Leo III ( Latin: Leo III; 750 – 12 June 816) was bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States from 26 December 795 to his death. Protected by Charlemagne from the supporters of his predecessor, Adrian I, Leo subsequently strengthened Charlemagne's position by crowning him emperor.

Confusion in Rome continued, however, and Charlemagne in the autumn of 800 went there “to restore the state of the church, which was greatly disturbed.” In the presence of Charlemagne, on December 23, Leo solemnly purged himself of the charges against him.
3 de jun. de 2017 · Attacked in the streets of Rome by supporters of his predecessor's nephew, Leo sought the aid of Charlemagne and eventually crowned him emperor, establishing an important precedent. As pope, Leo was adept in diplomacy and managed to keep his Carolingian allies from exerting any real influence on matters of doctrine. He died in 816.

Where Adrian had tried to maintain independence by balancing the Byzantine emperor against the Frankish king, Leo from the first showed subservience to the latter.
Key Points. In 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne the Emperor of the Romans, thereby extending Charlemagne’s power and authority. Some historians believe that Charlemagne was surprised by the coronation and would not have gone into the church that day had he known the pope’s plan.

Elected pope with the support of the clerical party in Rome and perhaps uncertain of his position in the eyes of the Roman aristocracy, Leo quickly sent a letter to charlemagne asking renewal of the Frankish-papal friendship alliance.
