The Hinomaru was decreed the merchant flag of Japan in 1870 and was the legal national flag from 1870 to 1885, making it the first national flag Japan adopted. While the idea of national symbols was strange to the Japanese, the Meiji Government needed them to communicate with the outside world.

The origin of Japan’s flag can be traced back to the 12th century, during the Kamakura period. At that time, the flag was made of fabric and featured a Buddhist emblem known as the Hinomaru or “circle of the sun.”

The national flag of Japan was adopted on January 26, 1870, and officially recognized on August 13, 1999, following the passage of the Act of National Flag and Anthem. The flag is officially named the N isshoki , which means the sun-mark flag.
