Black Mask is Roman Sionis, a crimelord in Gotham City and one of Batman's enemies. The mask that he wears is ebony carved from his mother's coffin, and was at one point burned into his skin so severely that it has become indistinguishable from his actual face.
I'd stick to the original Black Mask comics (Batman #386-387, Detective Comics #553, Batman #484-485), They may not be perfect but their the best of the lot before he became a torture loving, Red Skull Knock-Off.
