The first season showcased fascinating worldbuildind, captivating the viewer with enchanting atmospheres and the promise of a journey in search of the knowledge at the end of the abyss, all qualities this season completely failed in carry on.

Though it may seem little more than an adventurous children's anime, chibi art and all, it gradually reveals itself as something much darker, as Riko's and Reg's hopeless ascent continues, stumbles along, no happy ending in sight, death— and worse— awaiting them for each step they fall.

In Made in Abyss, the main characters go down to explore the abyss and look for someone on the bottom and in Arifureta, they go down to get out of the labyrinth. Both high fantasy shows with interesting premises and worldbuilding, as well a beautiful and cutesy artstyle that hides darker undertones and gorier scenes.
