Ludwig Georg Thedel Graf von Wallmoden (6 February 1769 – 22 March 1862) was an Austrian General of the Cavalry, best known for his training of light infantry and the refinement of the Tirailleur system.

Johann Ludwig Graf von Wallmoden-Gimborn wurde im Erbbegräbnis der Familie in Heinde bei Hildesheim bestattet. Seine bedeutende, fast 600 Werke umfassende Gemäldesammlung wurde 1818 versteigert und in die ganzen Welt verstreut.
Johann Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn (Illus. 1; cf. Cat. No. H 1 and H 2), an illegitimate son of George II (cf. Cat. No. 23), had the palace built in what is today Georgengarten to house his art collection after its completion in the later 1790s1 (Illus. 2; cf. Cat. No. H 10).
Raised at the court of St. James, Johann Ludwig made the Grand Tour in 1765 and then settled in Hanover, where he built a castle, the Wallmoden-Schloss, to house his collection of antiquities. It may have been at this time that he acquired the picture.
