The beach too forms a sweeping curve, and with its wide, yellow sands and backdrop of cliffs is amongst the most beautiful of the region, Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863), and Gustave Courbet (1819-77) had oil painted at Etretat, and Monet followed in their footsteps.
Inspired by a true story, Invincible recounts the last 48 hours in the life of Marc-Antoine Bernier, a 14-year-old boy on a desperate quest for freedom. ‘Boats on a Beach, Etretat’ was created in c.1869 by Gustave Courbet in Realism style.

Gustave Courbet (French, 1819-1877) On View. The extension of a railway line from Paris via Le Havre brought tourism to the tiny fishing village of Étretat in the 1850s. Writers and artists soon flocked to the town, its picturesque half-mile of beach, and its striking rock formations.
The spectacular cliffs at Étretat culminate in a dramatic sea-arch with a needle of rock beyond. Courbet visited in the summer of 1869 and in a month completed five views of the cliffs and numerous seascapes. He worked quickly, painting out of doors.
