5 de jul. de 2020 · Javelinas. The collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu), commonly known as the javelina, is found as far south as Argentina and as far north as Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Collared peccaries are in the even-toed, hoofed mammal order of Artiodactyla.

Their preferred diet consists mainly of deer, though in the Big Bend region, javelina and rabbits may also be on their menu.
Of all the fascinating animals visitors may encounter in Big Bend, perhaps the most distinctive is the collared peccary ( Tayassu tajacu ), commonly called the javelina. Often mistaken for a pig, the javelina is a unique inhabitant of the desert Southwest.
Three excellent areas to look for large species like deer, javelina (also know as the collared peccary as shown above), mountain lion, fox, and coyote are the Chisos Basin, the area around Panther Junction, and Rio Grande Village.

The collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu), known in Big Bend as the Javelina, has managed to survive, adapt and continue to populate the deserts of the Americas from the southwestern United States to as far south as Argentina. They live together in family groups of between eight and fifteen, headed by the biggest, strongest male.
