Merchant and Ivory could really spot talent. Add in pros like Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Denholm Elliott and Simon Callow and you have a perfect cast.

30 de ene. de 2020 · Yes, they sold the series on Bette Davis starring as owner of the hotel—Bette being relevant to pop culture again because "Bette Davis Eyes" was the #1 song of 1981—but she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a series of strokes after filming the pilot. They very intentionally replaced her with Anne Baxter for the camp value/publicity.
20 de nov. de 2020 · R73 That movie you're thinking of was called Help Wanted: Male and it is on Youtube and Gil Gerard is indeed great looking in it. She had great presence and exuded charisma and charm in her Carson appearances which makes me think she would have been a perfect fit playing a lawyer or politician if the industry had been different at the time.

Speaking of Leon Ames, I was introduced to him in some Old Shit on TV called LIFE WITH FATHER, which was, of course, based on the longest running play on Broadway (record still unbroken!) a series that was ran for maybe only a season or two in the late 1950s when I was a wee gayling.
