The first incident occurred in November 1877, when he was shot in the breast by Bob Shaw in the Lone Star Dance Hall. Although his right arm was paralyzed, Ed switched his gun to his left hand and shot Shaw in the arm and leg. After Masterson's recovery, he replaced Larry Deger as the town marshal.

On April 9, 1878 Ed and an officer named Haywood broke up a raucous disturbance inside a saloon involving a group that included Jack Wagner and Alf Walker.

City Marshal Edward Masterson was shot and killed after disarming a drunk man who was in violation of the town's ordinance against carrying guns. After taking the gun, Marshal Masterson started walking away, but the man produced another pistol and shot him.
25 de oct. de 2021 · In 1878, Bat Masterson was elected sheriff by three votes. The same year, his brother Ed, who had succeeded Earp as town marshal, was fatally shot by a drunken cowboy, Jack Wagner. The local papers reported that Ed had killed Wagner in return.
12 de jun. de 2006 · City Marshal Ed Masterson had been killed in April 1878 while trying to disarm a drunken cowboy. Bat arrived by train on April 16, 1881, and immediately confronted Peacock and Updegraff, who were both armed.
While performing his official duties on the evening of April 9, 1878, Ed was shot and killed by two drunken cowboys from Hays. Before he collapsed, he fatally shot one of his attackers and seriously wounded the other.
