Poynter was the son of architect Ambrose Poynter. He was born in Paris, France, though his parents returned to Britain soon after his birth.

Edward Poynter was a prominent English painter, designer and draughtsman who served as President of the Royal Academy. He created large historical paintings such as Israel in Egypt and King Solomon, and received a knighthood and a baronetcy for his achievements.
Leading the Revival of Realism. Early in his career Poynter studied in Rome, where he met Frederic Leighton, his greatest single artistic influence. He then moved to Paris in 1855. On returning to London, he became involved on book illustration.
