The university was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1969 as Sangamon State University with a focus on post-graduate education. 20 de jun. de 2024 · Governor Richard Ogilvie signed into law Public Act 76-131, the bill creating Sangamon State University. At that time, the Central Illinois Committee for Higher Education was formed to raise funds and acquire land for the new University.
