James Lighthill nació de Ernest Balzar Lichtenberg y Marjorie Holmes: un ingeniero de minas alsaciano que cambió su nombre a Lighthill en 1917, e hija de un ingeniero. La familia vivió en París hasta 1927, cuando el padre se jubiló y volvió a vivir a Inglaterra.
