  1. Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland (17 March 1682 – 4 July 1726) was a British Army officer, peer, Whig politician and colonial administrator who served as the governor of Jamaica from 1721 to 1726.

  2. In 1716 Henry was created 1st Duke of Portland and Marquess of Titchfield, largely in memory of his illustrious father. Having inherited vast estates, he should have been extremely prosperous, but suffered heavy losses when the South Sea Bubble burst in 1720.
