For example: "The book was fascinating, and I read it from cover to cover in a single winter evening." Otherwise, I'd almost invariably use "on a winter evening" for an even that occurs at a specific point in time during that evening.

Now I understood "Open winter" is still in use. Your answer is very helpful to me. You would never use "It is warm today" as a substitute for "It is open today."
