Louis Athol Shmith AM (19 August 1914 – 21 October 1990) was an Australian studio portrait and fashion photographer and photography educator in his home city of Melbourne, Australia. He contributed to the promotion of international photography within Australia as much as to the fostering of Australian photography in the world scene.

Louis Athol Shmith (1914-1990), photographer, was born on 19 August 1914 at St Kilda, Melbourne, youngest of three children of Harry Wolf Shmith, manufacturing chemist, and his wife Genetta, née Epstein, both born in England.

Athol Shmith AM (1914-1990) was a Melbourne-based fashion and portrait photographer. He began taking society portraits in his parents' living room in the late 1920s. By the end of the 1930s he had premises in Collins St and was photographing international stage and musical celebrities including Vivian Leigh, Noel Coward and Isaac Stern.
