The band was originally formed in 2001, and was composed of vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Todd Sheaffer, violinist/vocalist Tim Carbone, mandolinist John Skehan, multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling, drummer/vocalist Carey Harmon, and bassist Dave Von Dollen.
A drummer, Harmon is the only member of Railroad Earth who doesn’t play a stringed instrument. The band has resonated for its singular sound, which songwriter Todd Sheaffer once joked is “Country and Eastern.” It frequently plays bluegrass festivals and is loved by jam fans.

Entering their third decade now, Railroad Earth have solidified their position in the jam world as a Bluegrass tinged Americana outfit. With their notoriety and hustle, also sadly came change in 2018 with the passing of founding member Andy Goessling.

Carey Harmon: drums, vocals. Andy’s years with RRE: 2000 – 2018. Railroad Earth grew out of picking parties on Andy’s porch, sometime around 2000. A group of musicians from the Northern New Jersey music scene, some with long relationships, others maybe only familiar, came together around both a love of, and a curiosity about, bluegrass music.
