Sir John's son George then married his cousin Dorothea, inheriting the Maxwell estates provided he assumed the Maxwell name which he did as 'Clerk Maxwell'. It was thus through his grand-father, the son of George, and his father that James Clerk Maxwell inherited the Middlebie estate of Glenlair.
John Clerk of Middlebie (1790–1856) was a Scottish advocate and father of the mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell.
James Clerk Maxwell was born on 13 June 1831 [16] at 14 India Street, Edinburgh, to John Clerk Maxwell of Middlebie, an advocate, and Frances Cay, [17] [18] daughter of Robert Hodshon Cay and sister of John Cay.
