Walter Edmund Lutz, her father, met her mother, Mona Furuki, while he stationed in Occupied Japan during World War II. After the war, the couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where her father opened up a shop called the Bamboo House. Of her childhood in the United States, Chow said:
