James was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire on 9 May 1825, the son of bookseller and sub-postmaster Robert Collinson (c.1786- June 1845). According to the website called ‘Our Nottinghamshire’ the Collinsons were originally farming people in the Mansfield area but Robert broke the mould by opening a bookshop in West Gate.
