Edward MacDowell was born in New York City, the son of a milkman and his musically inclined spouse. At eight, MacDowell began piano lessons with a boarder in the home, Juan Buitrago. Through Buitrago, the boy MacDowell met pianist and international concert star Teresa Carreño , who also provided MacDowell with instruction and encouragement.
MacDowell werkte tot 1889 in verschillende Duitse steden als muziekleraar en pianodocent. In de herfst van 1888 keerde hij terug naar de Verenigde Staten omdat hij het financieel niet meer kon trekken, waarschijnlijk door te veel concurrentie in Europa. His compositions won the approval of music critics, both in Europe and the United States, as well as of his contemporaries, including composers such as Franz Liszt and Joachim Raff. MacDowell's early works bear the influence of his training in Germany, reflecting European styles and cultures.
