Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer was married to Frederick Ponsonby in November 1780. The portrait may have been commissioned at about that time. The V&A holds a miniature of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough (P.44-1910), which is a pair to this one. It is also by Richard Cosway.

She married Frederick Ponsonby in 1780, the future Earl of Bessborough and the Duke of Devonshire’s cousin. She was devoted to her sister and assisted with her political campaigning.
