La trama de la película comienza en la noche de Halloween de 1963 cuando Michael Myers asesina a su hermana en la ciudad ficticia del Medio Oeste estadounidense de Haddonfield ( Illinois ). Quince años después se escapa, el 30 de octubre de 1978, del sanatorio Smith's Grove en que está ingresado y regresa a Haddonfield para matar de nuevo.

The tradition of Halloween on 31 October comes from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was the Celtic New Year and they celebrated it on 1 November because that was the end of summer and harvest time (life) and the beginning of winter (death). It was also the time for ghosts to return to earth for a day.
