Il gruppo fu chiamato The Primettes e nel 1960 ottenne un contratto discografico con la Motown che le diede il nome le renderà celebri, The Supremes. La Travis lasciò il gruppo all'inizio del 1962 perché i genitori volevano si concentrasse negli studi; Ross, Ballard e Wilson proseguirono la propria carriera come trio.
