The Bar-Kays were originally formed in Memphis, Tennessee, 1966, as a sextet backing group for Stax Records. They looked like they had a healthy career in front of them as a session band & recording outfit before the backbone of the group was killed, along with Otis Redding who had hired them as his backing band for a tour, in a horrific plane crash.
20 de may. de 2024 · The original Bar-Kays were a Memphis instrumental combo who scored an R&B hit on Volt with 1967's rousing "Soul Finger." Guitarist Jimmy King, organist Ronnie Caldwell, drummer Carl Cunningham, and saxist Phalon Jones perished with Redding, leaving trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander to re-form the group.
In 1971 namen de Bar-Kays de eerste zanger van de groep aan, Larry Dobson. Het album Black Rock bevatte veel invloeden van rock en funk van Sly and the Family Stone en Funkadelic. In augustus 1972 namen ze deel aan het muziekfestival Wattstax. De band werd als gevolg van hun optreden aldaar weer gewaardeerd door het publiek.
