Henry Fitzroy was the only illegitimate child that Henry VIII openly acknowledged. He was the son of Henry VIII’s long-term mistress Elizabeth Blount, often referred to as Bessie. Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond. Henry Fitzroy, the son of Henry VIII and Bessie Blount, was born near Ingatestone in about June 1519. Although illegitimate, as the king's only male son at the time of his birth he was a valuable asset. His mother was maid of honour to Catherine of Aragon, the king's wife.
