HUGO CHARTERIS was born in London in 1922, third grandson of the 11th Earl of Wemyss. He was educated at Eton and Oxford and served in the Scots Guards during World War II, for his part in which he was awarded the Military Cross. In 1948 he married Virginia Forbes Adam.
Selected by Evelyn Waugh in the Sunday Times as the best first novel of 1953, and phenomenally praised by critics on its first publication, Hugo Charteris’ A Share of the World is one of the great lost novels.
