This episode is a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" parody, in which Magnum is dressed up as Indiana Jones. Tom Selleck's prior commitment to the series forced him to turn down the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). However, production on the series was slated to start in May of 1980, but was delayed by an actors' strike.

As a huge Magnum and Indiana Jones fan I remember when I first saw that episode I was so stoked to realize that it was basically a parody that paid homage to Indiana Jones, as well as the fact that Tom Selleck was originally considered to be Indy before Ford! Has anyone else seen it?
