In 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated Lewis Strauss as Secretary of Commerce in a recess appointment. Strauss had made enemies in the Senate during his tenure as Chair of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Strauss lost the confirmation vote, 46–49. In July 1959, Strauss resigned.
