The T-34-85 was the first Soviet tank to enter service with the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), along with the IS-2. Many T-34-85 tanks first saw action in April 1961 during the Bay of Pigs Invasion with an unknown number destroyed or knocked out during the battle.

The T-34/85 was a radical upgrade of the war-winning Soviet T-34, now fitted with a new three man turret and adapted 85 mm AA gun. 55,000 were made.
