  1. The town of Matewan has a unique feature that surrounds the entire downtown area – a floodwall. The exterior of the wall tells the history of Matewan through carefully placed vertical fluting that forms an etched mural.

  2. The wall facing Matewan is embellished with stylized piers and arches. Open sections of the wall allow pedestrians to go from one side to the other, except, of course, during floods.

  3. Between April 2nd and April 5th, 1977, Matewan and the surrounding area received nearly 30 inches of rain. The result of this rain was Southern West Virginia's largest flood in recorded history and the second largest flood in the state's recorded history.

  4. A giant flood wall was commissioned, 30 feet tall, with massive steel doors that could slam across local roads, sealing in the town. It wouldn't be completed until 1997. The wall stretches 2,350 feet along the river, and was credited for saving Matewan from a particularly disastrous surge in 2003. But it's not all grim practicality.

The wall itself was built with many stylized graphics cast into the wall itself. These graphics outline the history of the town, including the “Matewan Massacre” and the local Hatfield and McCoy clans.
