16 de jun. de 2020 · Susan Rothenberg’s paintings are built like walls—obdurate, unmoving—yet they seem like portals, always beckoning to a world beyond. When she first showed her work at 112 Greene Street Gallery in New York in 1975, her canvases must have been imposing, like ruins from another time.
Her early work—large acrylic, figurative paintings—came to prominence in the 1970s New York art world, a time and place almost completely dominated and defined by Minimalist aesthetics and theories. The first body of work for which Rothenberg became known centered on life-size images of horses.
Susan Rothenberg was a contemporary American artist known for her glyph-like paintings of animal and human figures. Rendered in gestural brushstrokes reminiscent of the work of Philip Guston, her paintings explore both collective and personal memory.
