Indeed, her young husband, Henry, son of the 2nd Baron Spencer, had fought so bravely at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642 that the king created him the 1st Earl of Sunderland in 1643. It was in that same year that he was killed at the age of twenty-three by a cannon ball at the First Battle of Newbury.
