Father Divine (c. 1876 – September 10, 1965), also known as Reverend M. J. Divine, was an American spiritual leader from about 1907 until his death in 1965. His full self-given name was Reverend Major Jealous Divine, and he was also known as "the Messenger" early in his life.
Father Divine, prominent African American religious leader of the 1930s. The Depression-era movement he founded, the Peace Mission, was originally dismissed as a cult, but it still exists and is now generally hailed as an important precursor of the civil rights movement.
25 de feb. de 2008 · Father Divine, born George Baker, was the founder of the International Peace Missions Movement, a religious organization that promoted racial equality and economic self-sufficiency. He claimed to be the second coming of Christ and established interracial communal living facilities across the country and abroad.
Mrs Peninniah Divine, also called Mother Divine, had been married to Father Divine some 30 years at the time of her death. She died in seclusion amongst what was, at the time, the Peace Mission's farms and other rural upstate New York business collectively called the "Promised Land".
