Greener opened a private law practice in Washington, DC, and famously defended Johnson Chesnut Whitaker, a Black West Point cadet who in 1881 was found beaten and tied to his bed in the barracks; he was subsequently accused of inflicting the injuries on himself and was dismissed from the corps.
