Elizabeth Dole was only the second woman to serve as president since Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881. She totally restructured the world’s largest humanitarian organization during her eight years as president, serving as a volunteer in her first year.
Following her time at the Red Cross, Elizabeth Dole sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, becoming the first viable female candidate from a major political party. She withdrew from the race in late 1999 and endorsed fellow Republican George W. Bush in early 2000.
Elizabeth Hanford Dole, having served in five presidential administrations, has one of the most storied careers in American politics and public service.
