Herbert Henry Lehman (March 28, 1878 – December 5, 1963) was an American financier and Democratic politician who served as the 45th governor of New York from 1933 to 1942 and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1949 until 1957. Early life and career.

For most of his life, Herbert Lehman was heavily involved in charitable and philanthropic endeavors, including his long involvement with Lillian Wald’s Henry Street Settlement, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Herbert H. Lehman served two terms (1929-1933) as lieutenant governor of New York State under the administration of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who referred to him as “my good right arm.”
