Once on This Island is a coming-of-age one-act stage musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. It is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, a Caribbean -set retelling of Hans Christian Andersen 's fairy tale The Little Mermaid. [1] .

Once on This Island was first produced off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty, directed and choreographed by Graciela Daniele. The production moved to Broadway the following season, making it Ahrens + Flaherty’s Broadway debut.
Their first Broadway musical was Once on This Island, in 1990, which transferred from Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons. [5] [8] The musical was nominated for 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. The London production of the show won the Olivier Award (London's Tony) for Best Musical in 1995.
