The Ballad of John Axon, written and performed by Ewan MacColl, is a powerful song that pays tribute to the hardworking and courageous railway workers of England. Through its vivid lyrics and emotive melody, the song provides a glimpse into the challenging and often dangerous lives of these men.
Devised by Ewan MacColl, radio producer Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger, the Radio-Ballads set out to crystallise in words and music the experience of different ways of life - the words being supplied not by actors but by the real occupants of those lives and jobs, whether miners, fishermen, boxers or teenagers.
The radio ballads were the joint creation of Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger. A radio ballad is a sound-tapestry woven of four basic elements: songs, instrumental music, sound effects and the recorded voices of those with whose lives each program deals.
