Louis Athol Shmith AM (19 August 1914 – 21 October 1990) was an Australian studio portrait and fashion photographer and photography educator in his home city of Melbourne, Australia. He contributed to the promotion of international photography within Australia as much as to the fostering of Australian photography in the world scene.

Athol Shmith AM (1914-1990) was a Melbourne-based fashion and portrait photographer. He began taking society portraits in his parents' living room in the late 1920s. By the end of the 1930s he had premises in Collins St and was photographing international stage and musical celebrities including Vivian Leigh, Noel Coward and Isaac Stern.
Elegant, bold and often experimental, Melbourne photographer Athol Shmith (1914–1990) worked in fashion, theatre, advertising and portraiture for decades. Shmith's have been called 'perhaps the finest of all Australian fashion photographs'.
