Built in 1933 as the Samuel Gompers Industrial High School for Boys, the historic building has lovely architecture but the school long struggled against the realities of life in a rough neighborhood.
Gompers School, also known as Eastern High School and Samuel Gompers General Vocational School, is a historic high school located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It was designed and built during a period from 1904 to 1906 as a public high school and remained as an educational facility until its closing in 1981.
Gompers opened in 1955 as a junior high school, named after labor union leader Samuel Gompers. During the early 1980s Gompers was designated a math-science magnet school, as part of the school district's effort to integrate its schools in response to a 1977 court order, by attracting white students to predominantly minority schools.
Samuel Gompers HS, purpose-built as an “industrial” public high school, was the first such institution to focus its training on a single industry-the electrical, rather than on multiple trades, preparing students for the integrated labor of mass production.
